ABOUT THIS EVENT

UXPALA DEI Series #1:
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion 101: DEI Basics

Widespread protests have filled the streets in every U.S. state and around the world almost daily since George Floyd’s murder at the hands of Minneapolis police late in May, 2020. As the Black Lives Matter movement reminds us — and as the murders of Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor, and too many others have made painfully obvious — Black people and people of diversity often experience a harsher standard of treatment, judgement and opportunities than White people do.

The sheer number and variety of people now speaking out against discrimination suggest that the push toward greater accountability and equality is reaching every corner of our lives – including our UX and product development teams.

UXPALA is excited about cultural focus DEI issues, growth and development — but we can’t stop there.

Over the next 24 months UXPALA will be producing a series of DEI events focusing on:

  • The importance of growing and nurturing teams of diversity
  • How to create a workflow and mind set to design with diversity first
  • How to be an advocate, nurture and create your own teams of diversity
  • What inclusion means to our work, products and the future world we are designing

Who should attend:

  • Anyone working in UX, UI, Product Design, IXd, Motion, Visual Design
  • Product/project managers
  • Directors, VP’s C-Level
  • Open and relevant to anyone interested in diversity, inclusion, equity and forward thinking future design

SPEAKERS

Ender Ricart, PhD (they, them, their)
Senior UX Researcher, Google
Anthropologist and User Experience Researcher. I specialize in conducting UX research for emerging technologies and conversational AI. I translate research insights into concept ideation and actionable solutions for product teams.

Darren Hood, MSUXD, MSIM, UXC
Senior Learning Experience (LX) Designer & Adjunct Professor, Michigan State University
I possess over 2 decades of experience design operation, streamlining processes, and improving UX maturity levels for several organizations, including the Fortune 50, through usability, UX research, information architecture, interaction design, and interface design principles. I also take great pleasure in mentoring and engaging in educational efforts. I currently serve as an adjunct professor for Kent State University’s UX Design Master’s program and Lawrence Technological University. I’m also the host for The World of UX podcast on CX of M radio via Michigan State University.

Bachul Koul (They/Them/Theirs)
Associate Partner at Kearney, Board Member at LYRIC
My passion is working with leaders to ensure that their organizations are fit and agile enough to not only respond to change, but to welcome it and leverage the insights and adaptations for long-term success. Much like you should not only take the resting pulse of a human patient in crisis, organizations should know their baselines and barometers for change at all times to maximize organizational effectiveness. I am a passionate advocate for social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion and through a combination of personal lived experience and study, I hope to help leaders take a holistic, internal/external DEI lens to their organization so they can meaningfully eradicate systemic bias and create a true sense of belonging for employees, customers, partners, suppliers, et. al.
