<strong.Pomona, CA, 19 January, 2024 – Cal Poly Pomona kicked off their 5th annual Design for Good Marathon, with their largest non-profit organization to date, It Gets Better. In 24 hours, these students made activations that elevate the social, physical and experiential organization, with a mission to empower LGBTQ+ youth.

It Gets Better is a globally recognized non-profit organization that provides opportunities to learn, discover and better understand the queer experience. The non-profit empowers youth with opportunities to connect with other like-minded individuals and provides programming and grants to form projects that make public schools more inclusive.

Students organized themselves into five teams to create various improvements to the It Gets Better experience. This work spans the gamut of content design, social templates, trade show booths, motion graphics, activation spaces, collateral and digital assets that allow for a fuller range of expression. You may find the work they did on platforms such as Youtube, Instagram, Twitch and TIkTok.

We are incredibly proud of the work they have accomplished in a short amount of time. This work was made possible by the help of the Los Angeles Design Community, AIGA LA, AIGA Cal Poly Pomona leadership team, Jennifer Avila, Jasmine Jeanine Guevara, Jade Krystle Campos, Dom Almario, Tyrell Keon Malonzo, Taz Alamillo, Lauren Ussery, Cal Poly Pomona’s Associate Professor, Anthony Acock, and all the student designers that made this happen.

Design for Good is a growing AIGA LA initiative that focuses on social change through the lens of design. In past years, we have supported programs that seek to enhance the life of immigrants (Creative Jam 2019) to groups like Project Sister (Crisis and Family Counseling Organization), and Undocumented Student Services (Cal Poly Pomona). We hope to continue this work in coming years with more non-profits and programs.

Historically, Cal Poly Pomona’s 24 hour design marathon was modeled closely after the AIGA student group’s similar annual event, Creative Engine, hosted each year at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg Missouri (UCMO). By working closely off of UCMO’s precedent the team was able to put together an event that not only created a large body of portfolio worthy work in a short amount of time, but also was achievable and for good causes near and dear to the student population.

Since the first urban environments of the Roman Empire, signs have been used to direct, lead, and inform our behavior. These primitive communication tools have stood the test of time because they can deliver a concise message at a specific location, they can communicate a complex message in a blink of an eye, and finally they can communicate a message in a universal way that everyone can understand. KindSign, an open sourced art project is changing this by creating signage that communicates personalized provocative messages that will challenge, inspire and delight. The workshops are organized to engage the general public in the creative process. Participants include creatives, designers, artists, makers, and non-designers. No design or art skills are necessary, all are welcome to participate. The workshop is $10 (includes your own sign) and tickets are limited, please RSVP. To read more about KindSigns, check out our blog. The Noun Project in an exciting workshop where we will be creating a collection of these powerful pictographic messages. As a participant you will start off by concepting a message for your very own KindSign. You will then work through a process of transforming your personal message into pictoral elements. Finally, we will wrap up the event with group presentations. After the event, the sketches will be transformed into polished vector icons and will be printed on aluminum signage. All of the participants will then be sent their very own KindSign that can be placed into their built environment.
The AIGA Los Angeles Student Portfolio Review provides design students with practical advice on how to present themselves and their work as they embark on a career in the design industry. Students receive thoughtful, constructive, one-on-one evaluation of their work by an array of design professionals from the Los Angeles area. The goal is to offer candid advice about student portfolios based on professional experience. It’s also a great way to network and become aware of “who’s who” in the LA design community. This year, local LA design firms and agencies will open their doors, and host students in their own offices around the city. Details Locations: City-Wide Saturday, May 3 2014, 1-4pm Portfolio Day is free and open to all current AIGA student members.
